al-fatihah

the intercultural blend of malaysia is one you have to have lived to appreciate. on the outside looking in, i'm not sure how others perceive us.

my upbringing and childhood is such that i've always felt lost watching contemporary malay movies, it's like another world yang.......ade ke org macam tu? (sbenarnye ade, tapi mase tu worldview aku macam guli cume kenal people i've known all my life) gile macam melayu celup kan.

but watching yasmin ahmad's movies is like, seeing a childhood friend. watching all the things you can relate to that you never see anywhere else. and it reminds me of all the things i love most about my country.

each of her work gives out the same feeling of nostalgia, of patriotism, a love of the people and cultures of malaysia : tgk 10 kali pon nangis and sometimes it's the simplest thing. because it's so....malaysian. it makes you think, why would you want to be anything but? through her blogs i was utterly bewitched by her worldview, her giving spirit, her inspiring words, her creativity.

i believe she's shaped our generation, subtly. and i hope we never forget the things we learned and the message behind her commercials or movies. that we embrace each other regardless of race, religion and age barriers. now more than ever, with the plane tragedies, senseless deaths, stupid, stupid malaysian politics - thank you, you've given us something beautiful to hope for.

may Allah help her family through this difficult time.

rest in peace, yasmin ahmad.
